XL427 Mensa Deathsquad Remix coming September 24

Andy Ingram

Kansas City's Brandon Phillips is a talent masquerading under many names. Mensa Deathsquad is his electronic project. Through a connection with Sweet Cheetah Publicity, Mensa Deathsquad remixed a track from the recent album "Thee Attack" by the Dayton space pop band XL427. In a style that Phillips describes as "Shoegaze Rollerdisco", "Ideas (Mensa Deathsquad Remix)" is releasing digitally everywhere on September 24, which intentionally coincides with International Massacre a Mosquito Day, a made-up holiday that XL427's Andy Ingram celebrates every year to commemorate his struggle and survival from the West Nile Virus the singer contracted in 2010.

A limited 7" vinyl with the remix on Side A and the original on Side B is available to pre-order in the Poptek Shop now.

Joe Anderl (The 1984 Draft) solo record to raise funds for the NAACP

Andy Ingram

On Friday June 19, Bandcamp is donating all of its fees to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. In solidarity with that, Joe Anderl is releasing his final solo album, "I Love Joe Anderl", digitally for the first time on Bandcamp. Anderl will be donating 100% of the sales to the NAACP Legal Fund as well. This album was Joe's last solo record before The 1984 Draft came into being. If you have ever heard The Draft play "Moons Over Miller Lite", this album is where that song originated. You can listen now at the link below but be sure to purchase on Friday.

New Golden Orra Single

Andy Ingram

On July 10, 2020, Cincinnati's cute and oddball Golden Orra will be releasing another new single, "Demon". Look for it in digital stores and streamers everywhere. The single, of course, features former Floral drummer and Mary Kate and Trashley mastermind Alexander Scaglia. Again he is joined by Jimmy Rice on bass and Joey Cook (Joey Joesph, Pomegranates) recording, adding synths and tambourine. And if we can get even more indie rock geeky, Pomegranate and Sabbath Recording owner Jacob Merritt joins in on drums.

You can hear the single now courtesy of Poptek. You can pre-order it as well from your favorite digital retailer.

On that same day look for the previous Valetine's single "Can't Get Enough" available on streamers and in digital retailers for the first time.

Blackout Tuesday

Andy Ingram

We at Poptek are standing and observing Blackout Tuesday with our black friends and fellow artists, fans, and leaders fighting against racism, injustice, and police brutality.

We are equals in humanity and creativity and talent and intelligence and our black friends deserve to create art, perform, drive to and from gigs, pack up after gigs, and live life in peace without undeserved targetting and fear for their lives.

"Supine Sailor", the lost Kris N. album is out now from BandCamp

Andy Ingram

To support our artists and another of BandCamp's "no-fee" day, we are surprise releasing the "lost" Kris N. album "Supine Sailor".

In the years before "The Thankful Parade", Kris and Andy played out most of these songs as a duo, "hits" like "Book of Revelations", "I Fall Shorter", "Let's Make Friends", and "Background Music". Then both their lives blew apart for different reasons and by the time life healed, the duo became a four-piece and "The Thankful Parade" was made. It just didn't make sense to play those songs anymore or release the recordings, until now! The songs are still so great!

The 1984 Draft Share New Single

Andy Ingram

In celebration of Joe Anderl's birthday today, we are premiering a new single from The 1984 Draft, "Elephun". Stream it or download it here. The Draft is working on new material while at the same time re-recording one of their classic albums "Bo Jackson Up the Middle". We think "Elephun" is a grat picture of where the band is going!

A Mary Kate and Trashley Valentine

Andy Ingram

Allow us to announce our newest artist by playing you a song for Valentine's Day.

http://poptek.com/mary-kate-and-trashley/

Listen to that intro! The artist is Mary Kate and Trashley. The song is called "Crush". Appropriate, isn't it?

Mary Kate and Trashley is pretty much just Alexander Scaglia, formerly the drummer of The Florals, playing and singing everything. The name so perfectly describes the sound, and Alexander's eccentric personality. Mary Kate and Trashley "Make A Record" will be released on cassette and digital on April 5, 2019.

Brenna Myers (from Once A Pine and The Florals), Isaac Karns, (from Marble Garden), and Alexander all took turns recording the album. Karns mixed and mastered the EP.

You can pre-order "Make A Record" now from the Poptek Shop.

A Good Year, a New Year!

Andy Ingram

Thank you for all your support and encouragement in the astronomical year of 2018. The world did not end like some feared, though we threw our semi-annual party at The Last Stand Farm that we call Communivale, just in case it did.

We released a rocking great new full-length from The 1984 Draft called "Makes Good Choices". You can stream it here. We love it and others seemed to as well. The vinyl is still on sale in the Poptek Shop if you need that tangible piece of wax and cardboard to enjoy your music. Joe, Eli, Justin, and Chip's hair are planning a new EP in the upcoming year.

We made people sad with the heartbreaking but oh-so-catchy debut of Second Best. And for melancholy people like Christopher Palassis, sad songs are therapy. If you need a free session, you can sing along to that album here.

The prolific Kris N. came out of a an unofficial retirement to bring back his "Song of the Week" series. Catch up here. We are really excited for a yet-to-be-titled Kris N. EP in 2019. The songs are written. Practice has started. Now Kris, Lindsey, Andy and whoever ends up playing guitar just need to press record.

We also have quite a few more releases lined up for 2019.

Okay Lindon is making a reggae record. No, that is not a typo and yes it does sound great. Jordan recorded drums with Isaac Karns at Marble Garden. Dustin is recording the rest of the album now with Erica and Andrew. We predict a Caribbean tour.

Mary-Kate and Trashley is ready to debut with a cuteness and a sound that you can hear just by saying their name. Alexander Scaglia, formerly of The Florals, who also designs under the name WolfBomb, plays everything himself in MK&T. He also recorded at Marble Garden under the control of Mr. Karns.

XL427 is finishing up their longtime-coming second album and it is way spacier than their debut. "Thee, Attack" should suprise some people. Andy takes forever to write and record songs but when he finally settles on something, it's quite good.

Second Best is also working on a new album, though the duo may change their name back to L'Albatros. We'll see.

We also hope to debut Once A Pine, the new band from the super-talented Brenna Myers, formerly of The Florals.

Expect other surprises too, just because we can.

It's Record Store Day Every Day!
