My Science Fiction Twin
MY SCIENCE FICTION TWIN
Jonathon Smith owns too many records, drinks way too much coffee, and tries to write songs. Because his real name isn't ideal for search engine optimization, Jonathon records as My Science Fiction Twin. He quietly records his vocals while his family sleeps, works in education in Kansas City, and still calls people on the phone like he did in the old days.
Everything can influence Jonathon's music: French-pressed coffee, oatmeal stouts, and sunrises in Swope Park. The writings of Nabil Ayers, Kelly Barth, Matthew B. Crawford, Alan Licht, Esau McCaulley, Rebekah Taussig, and Jamar Tisby have been helpful as well. Often, these non-musical factors impact his songs just as much as the psychedelic, new wave, and bedroom pop albums that he listens to.
If the songs are relatable and creative, as Jonathon hopes, it’s because his friends believe in them and contribute compelling parts. They make time in their busy schedules for creative pursuits, showing their dedication and support. The new album, A Slow Unlearning, reflects the slow, exhausting process of unlearning, active listening, and growth, acknowledging progress as a winding path of setbacks and breakthroughs.
