When Kris N. made "The Thankful Parade" in 2013, the new lush, hi-fi sound and band marked an intentional change in direction for a solo artist known for four albums of hissy kitchen recordings and loads of "Song of the Week" downloads. Now nine years later with "Tilted Summer", the frontman-named band with a frequently mispronounced last name settles confidently into the middle of their history, combining the hi-fi newness of their beauiful, most recent album with stylish touches from their lo-fi beginnings.
Basically "Tilted Summer" is the "punk rock" album that Kris Neises has been wanting to make since high school. That is if you allow "punk rock" to mean loud guitars, big drums, clever phrases, and literary references to J.D. Salinger, as only Kris N. can do.
These new recordings were a collaboration of Kris Neises and Andy Ingram. The familiar duo recorded drums and guitars in Poptek's Our Arsenal studio before Neises added vocals and bass from the comfort of his own home.
The grungey "Pop Music is Hard" laments just that, that when someone "got my girl, got my health, there's nothing left to sing about". "Struggle" is the pop disco single of the record made by two artists who don't listen to disco nor Top 40 radio. "This Land is My Land" may sound like a patriotic anthem. Listen closer. It's not. The first single from the record will be "Leo the Lion", a fun rock song full of Dayton-centric name drops. The closer of the EP full of musical references is a song of Kris N. referencing his own history of songs. "Tilted Summer" is a short run of five songs but one that is smart and catchy and fun and witty and honest.
"Tilted Summer" is another proud release from Poptek Records available on the first day of Summer, June 21, 2022. The first single from the EP, "Leo the Lion", will release everywhere on May 10. The second single, "Struggle", comes out on May 24. The third single, "Pop Music is Hard", releases June 7.
